The Wakefield Archers Beginners Course - BOOK YOUR PLACE HERE
Archery Beginners Course
A beginners’ course covers everything needed to get you started safely in the sport of archery with tuition from qualified coaches. The total cost of a course is £70 per adult and £40 for juniors. The fee covers use of Club equipment and the 10 hours of tuition, which will take you from absolute novice to a safe and competent archer. This is often 1:1 while you are on the shooting line, especially for the first few hours.
Frequently Asked Questions – Please Read Before Booking
What equipment is used?
Equipment is supplied during the course, This is owned and maintained by the Club. During the beginner's course you will be using Olympic recurve, take down bows that have been made specifically for beginners. We have them in a large number of draw weights and lengths, and have both left and right handed bows. We also have bows with lower poundage's especially for juniors. All other equipment is also supplied by us, including arrows; finger tabs; strings; sights; arm braces; bow stands etc. We suggest you do not buy any equipment until you have completed a course.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
We provide all of the archery equipment suited to your size, handedness and strength. The course covers what to look for in your first bow so we recommend that you do not buy any equipment until you complete the course. The Great British weather, being what it is, could mean you need waterproof clothing, so bring a suitable covering. Think golf coat rather than winter parka. We shoot in all weathers, where safe. There will be refreshments (tea/coffee) available, but not food. We have scheduled in a break for some food, so bring a packed lunch.
What should I wear?
Clothing should be well fitting tops, not loose sleeves or baggy jumpers, comfortable flat shoes or trainers, possibly a floppy brimmed hat if you wish. Enough to keep you warm and dry should it rain. In the early part of the season the field can be a bit wet and muddy, please bear this in mind when choosing footwear. No sandals (Crocs). Any facial piercings may need removing or taping over, and any long hair needs to be tied back securely.
Can a junior attend on their own?
The course is open to anyone aged 12 or over (size dependant) but for children under 18yrs they must be accompanied by an adult every session. Should the child join the club after completing the course, this would still be in effect.
I’ve done archery before; do I need to do another course?
For experienced archers, such as those moving into the area or picking a bow up again after a break, we offer an assessment session with one of our coaches. There are three outcomes – that you can join without any further coaching, or you need additional sessions, or that you need a full beginners’ course.
Do I need to live in Wakefield to join the club?
No, It is not necessary to live in Wakefield, and some of our Members travel a fair distance to the Club's venues which are in the Wakefield area. If you really are a long way from Wakefield, then we may be able to recommend a Club that is closer to you.
Completion of the course.
All sessions will need to be completed to ensure passing the competence qualifying level. If the course is not completed in its entirety there is every chance the student would not aquire the required competency level, and would therefore not be eligible to join ArchergyGB, which is a requirement to join and shoot at most clubs in the UK. Should the club cause a session to be cancelled every effort will be made to ensure the student is given the opportunity to complete their training at a later date. This could happen in the event of adverse weather, when another date would be organised, or a place on another course would be allocated to the student. Once a booking has been made, cancellations will not be accepted for a course within 7 days prior to its commencement and refunds will not be available.
